Arriving in Ostrava

The main University campus is located in the western part of the city of Ostrava close to the tram stop called "17. listopadu".

Coming from the Ostrava-Mošnov Airport

From the airport in Ostrava – Mošnov you can take a bus or you can go by taxi. Taking the bus you will arrive at Ostrava Main Bus Station (UAN), from which you can take tram number 8 to "17.listopadu" tram stop located near the university campus. 45 minute ticket is necessary. Tickets for trams and buses can be purchased at vending machines, newsagents and tobacconists. Passengers should buy a ticket before getting on the bus or tram. The ticket must be validated (marked) as soon as you get on the vehicle. A ticket inspector may check the validity of a ticket at any time during the journey, and is authorised to ask the passenger to present a valid ticket. An inspector will confiscate invalid tickets and collect a fine in the case of a journey without a valid ticket. You can also use the taxi service, the price is approximately 300-500 Kč. The rate per kilometre must be displayed inside and outside of the taxi. Every taxi driver is obliged to issue a receipt for the fare paid.

Coming from the Prague’s Ruzyně Airport

If you are not coming to Ostrava by plane, you can go from Prague to Ostrava by train or by bus. The more comfortable way is to go by train. From Prague airport you can go to Prague Main Railway Station by city bus. Trains between Prague and Ostrava run roughly each 2 hours and the journey takes approximately 4 hours. Approximately 300 metres from the Ostrava-Svinov train station there is an Ostrava-Svinov tram stop; from here tram numbers 7,8,17 to the"17.listopadu" stop should be taken. This tram stop is located nearby the university campus. Tickets for trams and buses can be obtained at vending machines, newsagents and tobacconists. 15 minute ticket is necessary. Passengers should buy a ticket before getting on the bus or tram. The ticket must be validated (marked) as soon as you get on the vehicle. Coming by car

The Czech Republic has a network of motorways and roads that are moderately well marked. It is necessary to buy and display the obligatory motorway sticker when driving on the Czech highways. Stickers can be purchased at post offices, border crossings, and selected petrol stations.

Traffic regulations

The Czech traffic regulations are similar to those in effect in other EU member states. A few basic rules are:

  • the maximum allowable speed in towns and villages is 50 km/h (nights included)
  • the maximum allowable speed for cars and buses of up to 3,500 kg is 90 km/h on roads and 130 km/h on highways
  • the maximum allowable speed for motorcycles is 90 km/h
  • no consumption of alcohol at all is allowed before or during driving
  • seat belts must be fastened during the entire journey (driver and all passengers)
  • motorcyclists and their side-car passengers must wear helmets
  • lights must be switched on all the year long
